"Myoglobin: The Muscle's Oxygen Guardian"

International Chemistry Scientist Awards

Myoglobin is a small, oxygen-binding protein found primarily in muscle tissue, where it plays a vital role in storing and transporting oxygen to muscle cells during periods of intense activity. Structurally similar to hemoglobin, myoglobin contains a heme group that binds oxygen molecules with high affinity, especially under low oxygen conditions. It serves as a critical oxygen reservoir in cardiac and skeletal muscles, enabling endurance and high-efficiency performance. Myoglobin is also used as a clinical biomarker for muscle injury, particularly in diagnosing heart attacks and muscle-related disorders.
