Breaking Boundaries: The Science Behind Surfactants and Surface Tension

International Chemistry Scientist Awards

Surfactants (short for surface-active agents) are compounds that lower the surface tension between two substances, such as between a liquid and a gas, or a liquid and a solid. They consist of both hydrophilic (water-loving) and hydrophobic (water-repelling) parts, allowing them to interact with diverse molecules. Surfactants are essential in a variety of applications including detergents, emulsifiers, foaming agents, dispersants, and wetting agents. They play a critical role in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food processing, oil recovery, and nanotechnology.
