A Jersey City high school student is hoping to bring chemistry to life through a partnership with the Jersey City Free Public Library.

Oscar Wong, a rising senior at McNair Academic High School, recently launched Compound Classroom, a chemistry literacy initiative for children ages eight through 13.

Through the Compound Classroom, Wong aims to expose kids from low-income and underrepresented communities to fundamental chemistry concepts in a fun and engaging way.

“I was reflecting back on how when I was younger, even though I’m interested in science, there wasn’t really, like, a hub or many opportunities that aren’t behind a paywall,” Wong explained. “I thought it would be nice to bring the skills I learned from AP chemistry and create these sessions where every kid gets to do an experiment and have a mini-lesson.”
